A Whole New World

I couldn't believe my luck today. I am so glad I live where I live and how I ended up with a great job at an amazing museum I will never know. Today the teachers had a training session about Chinese Painting. First the curator gave us a talk in the gallery and it was very interesting and full of things I never knew. I did not know that we have one of the top five collections of Chinese art in the country for starters. We focused on painting and I really enjoyed learning about the importance of nature in many of the works. Then we went to our classrooms to practice some brushwork. We had an expert showing us how to do the strokes, hold the brush, and use the ink properly. Above is my most successful attempt at bamboo. It is hard to paint with ink but I really loved it. Will definitely take what I learned today with me into my own studio.

Lauren, it seems you are a real natural. I studied for 3 years and never got one painting as good as this one. Those bamboo stalks all have nice dry brush areas and you seem to have caught on to the bamboo leaves very quickly. Try some colored inks on your brush along with the India ink for a nice modern effect. It is a whole new world and could combine very nicely with your birdies if you keep it loose and simple. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I am excited to see what I can create with my new skill. I will have to go buy some inks and one of those great brushes....
